How to Unclog a Toilet if a Plunger Does Not Work

When the first attempt to unclog a toilet with a plunger fails, homeowners can become frustrated. Fortunately, it is often possible to fix a clogged toilet when this happens, without calling an expensive plumbing service. The easiest way to remove the clog when a plunger fails is with a closet auger. An auger is similar to a plumbing snake, but has a protective covering that protects the toilet porcelain.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

Closet auger

Instructions

1 Insert the closet auger into the toilet. Push the end of the auger that is covered in the plastic sheath into the hole at the bottom of the toilet until you can no longer see the sheath.

2 Turn the closet auger handle, which will force the end of the snake into the piping. Continue turning the handle until you meet the clog and force the auger through it.

3 Spin the auger handle in the opposite direction, causing the snake to retract from the toilet pipe. Lift the handle up and pull the auger from the toilet.
