How to use a headset as a microphone mac

Audio hardware on your Mac is quite simple. Audio signals are input through the microphone jack, and output through the headphone jack. The sound card will process all audio this way, regardless of the actual device plugged into the respective jacks. As such, your headphones can double as a microphone, albeit at mediocre quality, by simply changing their location.

Skill level:Easy

Instructions

1 Plug your headphones into the microphone jack on your Mac. This is quite simple as both devices share the same 1/8" (3.5mm) jack size.

2 Open a new file in any type of sound recording software. Alternately, you may go to your device settings to test the microphone levels and quality.

3 Speak into one of the headphones as you would a microphone. Surprisingly, they will transmit the signals to the sound card, resulting in a de facto microphone.

Tips and warnings

Some headphones or earbuds will only transmit through one side, normally the left. Test both sides to determine the optimal recording position.
