How to Use the Lame MP3 Encoder With Audacity

The Audacity audio editing software package is open-source, meaning that anyone can download and alter the program's code. MP3, on the other hand, is a patented, closed-source technology. Therefore, Audacity does not include support for MP3 in its installation package. If you want to use Audacity to convert an audio file in WAV, AIFF or any other supported format into an MP3, download and install the freely available LAME for Audacity plug-in.

Instructions

1 Navigate to the LAME for Audacity webpage. Click the "Lame v3.98.3 for Audacity on Windows" link. Click "Save" to save the LAME installer file to your hard drive.

2 Double-click the download LAME installer file to open it. Click "Next," accept the license agreement and click "Next" again. Click "Next," then click "Install" to install LAME for Audacity. Click "Finish" when the installation completes.

3 Launch Audacity. Press "Ctrl" and "O" simultaneously, then double-click the audio file you want to convert to MP3.

4 Click "File," then "Export." Select "MP3 Files" from the "Save as type" drop-down menu. Click "Save" to export the audio to MP3.

Tips and warnings

If Audacity can't locate the LAME plug-in, click "Edit," "Preferences" and "Libraries." Click "Locate" next to "MP3 Library," then click "Browse." Navigate to the "lame_enc.dll" file and double-click it.
