Things you need

Slip-joint pliersSoldering ironSolderBlocking diodeElectrical wiringWire strippers

Instructions

1 Disconnect the car battery before you start working, to be safe.

2 Use wire strippers to remove about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of three electrical wires.

3 Remove the wire-retaining bolts on the positive and negative terminals of your car battery. Connect a wire to the positive terminal, and a wire to the negative terminal, by slipping the uninsulated ends of the wire into the holes you created when you removed the bolts. Solder the wire to the terminals, and replace the wire-retaining bolts.

4 Twist the wire connected to the positive battery terminal around the positive wire of the blocking diode. The blocking diode ensures that charge flows in one direction, from the solar panel to the battery, preventing the panel from draining the battery on a cloudy day. Solder the connection.

5 Twist the negative wire of your blocking diode together with a third electrical wire. Attach the electrical wiring to the positive terminal of your solar panel. Solder the connection.

6 Attach the negative terminal of the solar panel to the electrical wiring attached to the negative terminal of the car battery. Solder the connection. Your wiring is complete.

7 Reconnect your car battery. You are ready to charge the battery using the solar panel.
