A pole wrap is designed to go around any cement, metal or wood poles that are unsightly or just plain dangerous. Basements have poles that structurally support the home. When a basement is finished and used as living space, the poles become hazarous obstacles for children. A pole wrap covers the pole, making it less dangerous for children and, with all of the options available, will match any decor.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

Pole wrapMeasuring tapePencil2 sawhorses or other cutting surfacesFine-toothed sawUtility knifeScissorsConstruction adhesiveCaulking gunMasking tape

Instructions

1 Measure the basement pole to be covered. Hold the tape on the floor with one foot or have someone else hold it for you. Pull the measuring tape to the ceiling and read the tape measure to determine the length of pole you will be covering.

2 Roll the pole wrap so it resembles a cylinder. Measure the correct length for the pole wrap using the tape measure. Mark the length with a pencil.

3 Cut the pole wrap using a fine-toothed saw. Lay the rolled-up pole wrap across the sawhorses. Line up the saw with the pencil marking on the pole wrap. Hold the rolled-up pole wrap in one hand and the saw in the other. Pass the sharp edge of the fine-toothed saw back and forth across the rolled-up pole wrap until the excess wrap has been cut off all the way.

4 Flex each panel of the pole wrap, if it has individual wooden panels. Lay the pole wrap on a flat surface such as a table or workbench. Bend the wrap around the edge of the flat surface where each panel meets. This will give the wrap the flexibility needed to wrap around the pole.

5 Wrap the pole wrap around the pole to be covered and determine where to cut it. Cut the wrap with a utility knife so it is slightly larger than the pole, which will allow room for the adhesive. Cut along a groove, if you are using a pole wrap with individual panels.

6 Load the construction adhesive into the caulking gun. Cut the tip off the end of the construction adhesive with scissors. Use the metal pin on the caulking gun to puncture the foil seal on the tube. Pull the plunger out of the caulking gun by twisting and pulling. Place the tube of adhesive into the gun. Twist the plunger and push the base of the plunger up against the base of the adhesive tube.

7 Apply the construction adhesive to the pole to be wrapped. Hold the tip of the tube up against the pole and slowly pull the trigger of the gun while moving the gun in the direction needed. Place two vertical lines where the wrap will come together. Apply the adhesive all the way around the pole about every 10 inches.

8 Wind the wrap around the pole, making sure the wrap joins together in the desired location. Apply one side and pull the other side around the pole until the two sides join together. Hold the pole wrap in place with masking tape until the adhesive has dried.

Tips and warnings

Some home improvement stores carry tubes of construction adhesive that don't require the caulking gun. For these, simply cut off the tip, squeeze out the adhesive and apply it to the pole.

Add caps and bases to give the wrapped pole a more finished look.
