Instructions for How to Make Bottle Cap Bows

In the realm of ribbons, bows and hair accessories, creativity continues to lead people to invent new trends and designs. For example, by recycling bottle caps and making them into a centre button, you can create an eye-catching and attractive hair bow. Make bottle cap bows using a variety of materials in a wide array of colours. The finished bows can perch prettily atop the head of your little girl to hold her hair back in style.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

NewspaperBottle capAcrylic paintSmall paintbrushSmall stickers, paper images or fabricScissorsGlue stickWhite craft glue or découpage medium20 inches of grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wideStraight pinHand-sewing needleMatching thread2 or 3 flat buttonsE6000 GlueMetal barrette clip

Instructions

1 Spread a newspaper out to protect your work area. Place the bottle caps you want to paint onto the newspaper.

2 Select an acrylic paint colour that will become the background colour of your bottle cap. Coordinate this colour with the grosgrain ribbon you will use to create the bow.

3 Apply the acrylic paint to the bottle cap with the paintbrush, covering the entire top edge of the bottle cap as well as the fluted sides. Allow the paint to dry completely before you proceed.

4 Cut out a paper image or a small circle of fabric to cover the top of the bottle cap. If you are using a sticker, no cutting is necessary. Apply a small amount of glue stick to the top of the bottle cap and affix the paper or fabric to the bottle cap. To apply a sticker, simply press the sticker onto the top of the bottle cap.

5 Coat the entire surface of the bottle cap with a thin layer of white craft glue or découpage medium to seal the bottle cap. Paint the medium on evenly with a paintbrush and allow it to dry completely before you proceed.

6 Lay the ribbon out horizontally on a flat surface with the wrong side of the ribbon facing up. Fold over the left edge of the ribbon approximately 3 inches and continue folding the ribbon over onto itself every 3 to 4 inches until you have folded the entire length of ribbon. Push a straight pin through the centre of the folded ribbon to hold it in place.

7 Pull the loops on each side of the centre pin out, fanning them out to resemble a bow. The centre pin will hold the ribbon loops in place.

8 Cut a 12-inch length of matching thread and thread it through the needle. Pull the end of the thread through to make a double length of thread on the needle and tie the ends. Stitch the centre area of the ribbon (at the pin, between the loops) with the needle and thread to secure the ribbon loops in place. Take five or six stitches, remove the pin, tie a knot on the end of the thread and clip off the excess thread.

9 Stack the buttons inside the bottle cap to see how many buttons you need to fill up the space (you will need two or three). Glue the buttons inside the bottle cap with the E6000 glue and allow the glue to dry.

10 Apply more E6000 glue to the surface of the button on the underside of the bottle cap and glue the bottle cap to the centre of the ribbon bow.

11 Glue the ribbon bow to the back of the metal barrette to finish the bottle cap barrette.
