Wanga dolls are a type of magic conjure object used to capture benevolent spirits and bring good luck to the person for whom the doll is made. They are not the same as the voodoo dolls used for curses and evil intent that most people have an image of, though the two are related. These dolls, which are also known as poppets, ouanga dolls, doll babies and obeah dolls, are simple to make and may bring you good luck.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

1 square foot of fabric (your choice)PenScissorsBag of fibre polyfillSheet of white paperSewing NeedleSpool of threadButtons, fake fur, assorted decorationsGlue gun

Instructions

1 Unravel the fabric and fold it in half once (lengthwise or widthways, it does not matter). Draw the shape for the wanga doll onto the fabric. The shape can be as simple as a basic gingerbread man shape (which is very common) or as elaborate as you want to make it. The more elaborate it is, however, the more difficult it will be to sew together. It can also be as large or as small as you wish.

2 Cut out the shape, cutting through both layers of the fabric.

3 Sew the two pieces of fabric together, sewing around the perimeter of the shapes. Leave the last 1/4 of the doll open and unsewn so that you can fill it. Turn the sewn shape inside-out so that the string is not visible and only the seam of the doll can be seen.

4 Cut a small 1/2 by 3 inch slip from the paper. Write your wish on the sheet of paper and insert it into the open part of the doll. Wanga dolls are supposed to grant your wish once it is sealed inside the doll. The wish can be anything from a desire to lose five pounds to a wish to win the lottery. Use your imagination.

5 Stuff the doll with the fibre filling. Sew the doll up completely.

6 Decorate the doll as you desire. Sew on button eyes and glue on fake fur hair. You can even create an outfit for the doll. The more creative the decoration, the more likely your wish will be granted.

Tips and warnings

You can also want to fill the doll with beans or beads, if you don't want to deal with fibre filing.
