Kawasaki Small Engine Oil Types

A number of motor oil manufactures make oils specially marketed for small engines. Generally, a small engine consists of a four-stroke or two-stroke engine where the oil may be circulated through the engine or mixed with the gasoline. There are a number of types of oil to choose from. Most engine manufacturers recommend a type of oil to use in their machines.

Viscosity

The viscosity of oil determines how thick it is and is affected by temperature. The colder the temperature, the less viscous the oil becomes. Choosing the right oil for a small engine depends on the ambient operating temperature of the engine. The cooler the cold start temperature, the wider temperature range of oil should be used. The number in the oil indicates its viscosity. For most small four-stroke engines, SAE 30 can be used, but 10W-30 will work as well.

Synthetic

Synthetic oils are made of non-conventional fluids rather than crude oil. Synthetic oils perform well under a wider range of temperatures than petroleum-based oils, and you can go longer between oil changes when using a synthetic oil. There are synthetic oils made for four-stroke and two-stroke engines and are recommended for use by some manufacturers. For example, Vavoline makes oil specifically for boats, snowmobiles, and two-cycle gasoline-and-oil mixtures.

Manufacturer

The best oil to use in a small engine is the oil recommended by the manufacturer. However, if you can't find the exact oil recommended, a recognised national brand will suffice. Remember to change the oil when it looks black to maintain engine life and reduce wear. For example, for Kawasaki ATVs, the recommended oil is 5w30 to 10w40 depending on the exact model.
