Knitting Instructions for a Lap Robe

Throwing a lap robe over your knees is a cosy way to keep warm while sitting in front of the TV or at your desk on a cool evening. Only the most basic knitting techniques--the ability to cast on, knit, and cast off--are needed to knit a lap robe. Because of their small size, lap robes knit up quickly and require less patience and yarn than a full blanket.

Skill level:Easy

Things you need

YarnKnitting needles (see the ball band of your yarn to determine correct needle size)Ruler or tape measure

Instructions

1 Measure the width of the lap or chair you wish to cover. For use in wheelchairs, a 30 to 34-inch-square robe should be sufficient. Otherwise, 4-feet square is a good size. As long as you choose a good width, you can knit until the robe reaches a length that feels right to you.

2 Purchase a soft but durable yarn. Nursing homes and other institutions use strong detergents and heat in their laundry facilities, so a sturdy acrylic worsted may be the best choice. Cotton will shrink and wool will felt or pill when laundered repeatedly. Yarn mills are producing beautiful blends with the feel of natural fibres, as well as striped or self-patterning yarns in a myriad of colours. Avoid fuzzy or lacy yarns.

3 Visit an online stitch library to find a stitch pattern. The easiest stitch pattern is garter stitch, which is just repeating the knit stitch every row. If you wish to try a more interesting look, try a more unusual knitting stitch pattern.

4 Knit a sample swatch, by casting on 20 stitches and knitting in your pattern until you have a square.

5 Measure the width of your swatch with the ruler.

6 Multiply the desired width of your robe by the number of stitches in your swatch, then divide by the width of your swatch. This will yield the correct number of stitches to cast on.

7 Cast on the number stitches you calculated in the last step.

8 Knit in your pattern until the lap robe reaches the desired length. Cast off.

Tips and warnings

Begin and end the robe with a few rows of garter or seed stitch to prevent curling.

Circular needles are more convenient than straight needles for knitting wide items, like blankets and robes.

Lap robes that are too wide or have fringes may get caught in the wheels of wheelchairs.
