Linoleum Dent Repair

Economical, easy to install and available in a wide variety of styles, linoleum is a favoured flooring material for many home builders. Traditionally made with a combination of rosin, linseed oil, and wood and mineral fillers, the term "linoleum" is often used today to refer to vinyl sheet flooring, as well. Either type is durable, yet still susceptible to gouges or dents caused by dropped objects.

Floor cleanerUtility knifeMasking tapeLinoleum repair kitPutty knifeAdhesive remover (optional)BooksSeam sealer

Instructions

Small Dents

1 Clean the affected area with floor cleaner.

2 Cut away any frays, nicks or gouges, using a utility knife.

3 Tape around the area with masking tape.

4 Mix colourants for addition to the repair filler to create a filler colour that matches the floor.

5 Fill the dent with the repair filler and level it off at the top, using the plastic knife that comes in the kit.

6 Apply texture by embossing it with the texture paper that comes in the kit, if the original linoleum was textured. Allow the filler to cure for the time indicated in the directions. Common cure times are from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

7 Paint over the area, using the acrylic linoleum finish and the small, round brush that came in the kit.

Large Dent

1 Cut out the damaged area, using a utility knife. Cut along lines in the pattern of the original floor to ensure the cuts will be invisible. Use a straightedge to guide the blade when cutting.

2 Soften the linoleum with a hair dryer or heat gun and peel it up with a putty knife. Use the hair dryer or a heat gun to soften and scrape the original adhesive. Commercial adhesive remover may be necessary.

3 Cut a matching piece of linoleum, using the cut piece as a template.

4 Apply linoleum adhesive to the back of the matching piece and insert it into the hole. Weight the patch with several books as the adhesive cures.

5 Extrude a fine bead of seam sealer from the seam sealer applicator tube along the cut lines to seal the patch's edges. Quickly wipe up any excess.
