Memorization Games

Several games have been designed to improve your memorising skills. Memorising games have proved to have a positive effect on children's learning abilities. Elderly people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease are usually advised to play memorisation games to exercise their memory. To keep your brain in shape, you can try out hundreds of online memorisation games or just play some of the classics at home.

Classic Memory

The classic memorisation card game of all times, Memory, has its origins in Japan and was first published as we know it today by Ravensburger in 1959. The game is also known by the names Concentration, Pelmanism and Pairs. The object of the game is to find matches of cards. The cards are all be placed face down. A player gets to view two cards per turn and turn them back if they don't match up. Each matching pair gets removed and counts with the player's score. The trick is to remember the position of the cards to get as many matches as possible.

Online Memory games

A myriad of online memorisation games are available to play for free. Here are a few examples: Play with Your Mind has nine memory games in which you will be required to memorise pictures, shapes, sounds, numbers and words to exercise different types of memory. The Alzheimer's Disease Research website offers five games to play online, testing your memorising skills with pictures, words and numbers. Neuroscience for Kids provides interesting memorisation online games and memory experiments to try out at home or in classroom. Agame has a selection of colourful flash memory games available to play for free online. These games are very interactive and will test different memorisation skills.

Memory Party Game

Several memorisation games can be played at home with friends without having to buy the card game or play online. The Tray game is a good example: Take a tray, and arrange 10 to 20 different objects on the tray. Cover it with a towel, and tell your friends that you want to test how many items they can memorise at a time. Give them only one minute to memorise the items before covering the tray again. Have your friends write down all the items they could remember, and name the person with the most items the winner.
