My auto-rotate for my Android phone is not working

If the auto-rotate function on your Android phone is not working, a problem with your device's settings or the settings for a specific app could be to blame. A factory reset may be required to solve the issue, or a professional repair if the hardware itself has developed a permanent fault.

Settings

Make sure your device is configured to allow apps to rotate between landscape and portrait mode. Open the Settings app, tap "Display" and ensure the "Auto-rotate screen" box is ticked. Depending on the make and model of your phone you may find additional options enabling you to recalibrate and reset the accelerometer or gyroscope inside the device.

Reboot

Rebooting your phone clears the memory and resets your installed apps, and may be enough to get the auto-rotate function working again. Use the power button to switch the unit off and then on again. A full phone reset may also fix the issue, but will wipe your installed apps and settings -- open the "Backup & reset" page from the Settings app, then choose "Factory data reset."

Apps

Not all apps support the auto-rotate feature. If you only experiencing the problem in one or two apps, check the supplied documentation or support site to see if rotation is supported. Another possibility is that a customisation app is preventing other apps from rotating -- check the "Running" column on the "Apps" page of the Settings app and close any apps you think may be causing a conflict.

Reinstall

If a temporary bug prevents an app from rotating correctly, uninstalling and reinstalling it should clear up the problem. This also has the benefit of upgrading the app to the latest version, improving compatibility with your hardware. Open the "Apps" page in the "Settings" app then tap on an individual app and choose "Uninstall" to remove it. Open the Play Store from the phone to locate and install the app again. If you have previously purchased the app, the Play Store should recognise this.
