Old-Fashioned Nursery Ideas

Searching for items to create an old fashioned baby nursery can be an adventure. Nothing is guaranteed in your search, but a variety of speciality shops, including antique and thrift stores, offer the thrill of the chase. Old fashioned baby nurseries contain items crafted by hand usually from natural materials such as wood and cotton.

Rocking Horse and Toys

Rocking horses were once a staple in baby nurseries. Find an old rocking horse for your baby's nursery and have it refurbished. Antique stores, yard sales, flea markets and thrift shops are all great places to start. Vintage rocking horses are typically made of solid wood with a leather saddle and hair made of yarn. A jack in the box, rag dolls and vintage figurines of angels and animals also make great accents for your old fashioned baby nursery.

Bedding

Use French toile and knitted blankets for the baby's crib bedding. French toile is a plain-woven cotton fabric printed with a repeat pattern of country settings, animals, or people usually on a background of cream or white. Crib comforters and bed skirts are usually made of toile. Knitted blanks are also important since new parents often received knit blankets as gifts. Use your blankets to decorate your baby's crib and one for an arm or rocking chair.

Furniture

A cradle or crib can be used in your baby's old fashioned nursery. Cribs are a much newer feature than cradles, but antique cradles may be harder to come by in thrift shops and antique stores. Try online auction sites to find a vintage cradle if you decide to avoid using a crib. Remember to add a wooden rocking chair and small armoire for the room. A book shelf may also be added if there is room.
