Creating your own pencil case allows you to show off your own style and make a useful case at the same time. The envelope-style pencil cases are the easiest to make and decorate. A heavy fabric lining keeps the pencils from breaking through the case. You can choose any fabric for the outside of the case, as well as add applique items and a matching zipper. You may sew the case together using a thread and needle or a sewing machine.

Things you need

Instructions
1 Cut a slit in one piece of the lining fabric -- two inches from the top and eight inches across. The lining fabric should be a thick fabric such as upholstery fabric.
2 Cut another slit in one piece of the outside fabric -- two inches from the top and eight inches across.
3 Place the outside fabric pieces together, with the outside facing in.
4 Place a piece of lining fabric on either side, lining up the slits so the pieces match.
5 Pin the pieces of fabric together -- 1/4 inch from the edge.
6 Sew along the edge of the pins all around the fabric. Remove the pins. The bag should now be inside out with the edges sewn together almost 1/4 inch in from the edge.
7 Turn the back inside out so the outside fabric is showing.
8 Cut the fabric at both edges of the slit, 1/4 inch up and down. This will allow you to fold both edges of the slit up and down. .
9 Fold the top edge of the slit under itself and iron the fabric, so it creases and the fold stays.
10 Repeat the last step for the bottom edge of the slit.
11 Take apart the zipper so you have both sides separate. If your zipper does not come apart completely, that is OK. Just make sure it is opened while you sew.
12 Place one edge of the zipper under the crease of the top of the slit and sew the zipper to the underside of the top of the slit.
13 Repeat the above step for the second part of the zipper and the bottom slit.
14 Connect the zipper by hooking the slider over the top and sliding the slider to the other side.
Tips and warnings
Using a sewing machine to sew the case together will make it easier to go through heavy fabric. Add applique and other decorations to the outside fabric.
