Step-by-Step on How to Draw a Person's Head

There are many ways to draw a face, but drawing a simple full-face head follows artistic traditions to help the artist maintain normal proportions and create a degree of realism. Most heads are roughly egg shaped and the features are positioned using the length and width of the eye as a measurement for placement. Light sketch lines can be used to place eyes, nose and mouth, but the key to realism is to use shading rather than solid lines to form the features.

Instructions

1 Sketch an oval using very light pencil marks. Divide the oval in half using a very light vertical line. Draw a line one-third of the way from the top of the oval. Curve it lightly as if it were going around an egg. Draw another curved line one-third of the way up from the bottom of the oval.

2 Draw the eyes. Place two light dots on the upper curved horizontal line to locate the pupils of the eyes. Lightly sketch a circle around each to outline the iris. Starting from the inside corner of each eye, draw an arched line over the top of the iris circle to represent the upper eyelid. This line will usually cut off the top part of the iris unless the person you're drawing is supposed to be startled or afraid.

3 Draw a slightly less curved line under the iris circle, again cutting off a little bit of it, to represent the lower eyelid. The outer corner of the eye will come to a slightly rounded point. The inside corner of the eye is more rounded, sometimes almost seeming to have a little square shape for the tear duct. Examine your own eyes in a mirror to see how this looks. Add eyebrows above the eyes.

4 Position the nose in relationship to the eyes. In a well-proportioned face, the nose is the same width as one eye. An easy way to draw a nose is to lightly draw a line to indicate one side of the nose (not the centre of the nose) and then a shallow U shape and the end to indicate the tip. Even if you use shading or colour to make the nose more realistic, this is a good starting place. The tip should be about one eye width above the lower horizontal line.

5 Place the centre line of the mouth on the lower horizontal line. Lightly shade under the lower lip and then shade in the upper lip. Do not make a hard, solid line around the mouth.

6 Position the ears on each side of the head. The tops of the ears should be in line with the corners of the eyes and the ear-lobes should be in line with the corners of the mouth. There should be one eye-width between the corner of the eye and the beginning of the ear. Ears on the side of the head will look almost like narrow tabs, unless the person you're drawing has ears that stick out.

7 Add shading under the eyebrows and under and around the nose to lend it more definition. Also shade along and under the jaw line, which is the bottom line of the oval. Lightly sketch in a background. This can be a simple shading or an interior or exterior picture that gives location to the portrait.
