Tall Weed With Yellow Flowers & Pods

Broom plants, lush green shrubs in the legume family, were introduced throughout the West in the mid-1800s as landscape shrubs and fast-growing plants for controlling roadside erosion and stabilising mine tailings. Stiff stems made durable brooms for sweeping up around homesteads, and the sweet yellow flowers had many medicinal uses. However, the same traits that initially made broom plants desirable imports later made them insidious weeds almost impossible to eradicate.

Broom Characteristics

Scotch, French, Portuguese and Spanish broom are all separate but similar species native to Europe and the British Isles. These shrubs can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, as do all legumes, and therefore produce their own growth-enhancing fertiliser --- a competitive edge. The plants are also evergreen, since most photosynthesis is done by the stems. They grow almost year-round and can tolerate moist soil conditions, though they prefer drier, sandy soils. Abundant yellow flowers, often sweetly scented, quickly become leathery seedpods; countless long-lived seeds have sometimes been used as a coffee substitute. A single Scotch bloom plant can produce 15,000 seeds in one year.

Broom Growth

Brooms develop into thick, sometimes impenetrable stands --- ideal for making brooms and thatch roofs but inaccessible to wildlife. The vegetation is also bitter-tasting and unpalatable, providing little or no sustenance for birds and other animals, unlike the native plants broom will displace. The plants have aggressive taproots, in addition to a generous surface area and many-branched lateral roots. the stems of these weedy shrubs can grow to 3 or 4 feet tall in their first year, though they usually don't bloom or set seed until their third year.

Broom Invasiveness

Because brooms are not native plants, they typically need a disturbed, sunny environment to get established. They easily invade areas opened up by logging and logging roads. Their aggressive growth has made them a noxious agricultural and wildland pest throughout much of the West, including western areas of Canada. About 40 per cent of seeds germinate the first year, and 25 per cent the second year. The remaining seeds, with very impervious seed coats, can sprout many years later after tumbling down waterways, being torched in fires or scraped around in gravel roads.

Broom Elimination

Hand-digging and pulling broom is effective when both the infestation and plants are small. Integrated pest management strategies, or ecosystem-based controls such as using deep shade to slow plant growth and seed production, can also help. Mowing broom --- or grazing it down with goats --- can work, especially when plants are drought-stressed. Glyphosate herbicides work well on broom, either sprayed just as the plants start to bloom or painted onto plant stumps just after cutting.
