There are many activities that can be used to teach children about good nutrition. Some involve listening and learning about healthy food choices, but others involve student interaction. Additionally, learning about nutrition is important because children eat daily and make decisions about what they put in their bodies regularly.

Worksheet Activities

Introduce the food pyramid to children by explaining the basic groups of foods and the recommended portions of each. Give students a copy of the food pyramid with recommended food allotments. Provide students with a worksheet with spaces to record breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Have them record what they eat for a day or two and compare it to the recommended foods they should be eating. Students may be surprised to learn that they are not eating healthy. Discuss the importance of reading food labels when shopping. Tell students that food labels can help shoppers stay away from foods that may not be healthy for them. Divide students into groups. Give each group a worksheet and ask them to identify the best and worst foods for them and state why. The worksheet should have a space to draw the food and write why it was a good or bad choice. Give each group a different health concern. Tell one group to stay away from sugar. Tell another to stay away from salt and another to avoid fats. Give students labels and let them find their best choice. Students can present their findings to the class when finished.

Interactive Activities

Provide students with cereal, pasta or other food and ask them to measure out a portion. Then discuss portion sizes and compare a recommended portion size to the amount they selected. Students may be surprised to find that they often eat double or triple the recommended calories. Discuss how people can go to a restaurant and make modifications to make restaurant food healthier. Let students brainstorm ideas. Examples include: asking for salad dressing on the side, asking for buns without butter, skipping the bread basket and getting vegetables steamed. Then give students menus and let them take turns ordering food with modifications. Rotate those dining and those acting as waiters. There are websites that offer online games that reinforce good nutrition. These are excellent for centre based activities where several small groups of students will do activities and then rotate to a new centre.

Other Activities

Use literature to teach students about healthy eating. "The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food" and "The Race Against Junk Food" are two popular choices for younger children. Watch a free online video about nutrition. Children will be engaged and the information is presented clearly. Older children may enjoy rewriting a cookbook to make the recipes healthier. Brainstorm ideas to make recipes healthier. Then have students select recipes from an existing book and create healthier versions. The activity could culminate with a food tasting of some of the recipes.
