Balance

A balanced diet is important because you need to get a wide variety of foods. Eating all different foods helps you get a variety of vitamins in your body each day. Your diet should be filled with lean meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products and even healthy fats. Processed foods like cakes and crisps should be limited in your diet because they are empty calories that provide the body with little nutritional value.

Iron

Iron is needed in your body, especially during your teenage years. The Weight-Control Information Network explains that teen boys need iron to help their body as it grows at a rapid pace. Teen girls need iron in their body because of lost blood during menstruation. Too little iron in the body can lead to anaemia. Many different foods contain iron like red meats, whole grains, beans, dried fruit and iron fortified cereals.

Calcium is an essential mineral that is needed in your body. As a teen your body is growing and changing rapidly. Calcium helps build strong bones, which is the foundation for your body and how it moves. Calcium also helps to build strong teeth. Calcium can be found in dairy products like cheese, milk, yoghurt and even ice cream. Having 3 cups of dairy a day will help you get the recommended 1,200 mg of calcium a day.

Vitamins

B vitamins and vitamin A are important for your health. Vitamin A promotes a healthy immune system, growth and development of cells and can even improve your skin and eye health. The website TeensHealth recommends teen boys get 900 mcg of vitamin A and girls get 700 mcg a day. B vitamins are also needed for your health because they help support nerve and brain functioning and help break down proteins in the body. Eggs, meats, nuts, milk and cheese are all filled with B vitamins and milk, eggs, orange fruits, orange vegetables and fortified cereals are sources of vitamin A.
