The Best Satsuma Trees for Texas

Satsuma trees are a type of mandarin citrus. They have few seeds embedded in their pulp and their easy-to-peel rind is an orange colour that's close to red. Satsuma citrus is from Japan, but several varieties are adapted to the northern section of southeast Texas, where the weather becomes cool in the fall---a Satsuma's requirement---until the following spring.

Owari

The fruit from the Owari variety ripens between October and November. During the ripening process, the rind pulls away from the fruit inside, making it easy for you to peel it by hand. This Satsuma tree grows slowly with a drooping habit. But it also produces a larger crop of good-quality citrus, according to the University of Florida. Its firm flesh also makes it a good choice for canning. You'll find no more than six seeds embedded in it.

Armstrong Early

Even though the Armstrong Early ripens as many as 40 days ahead of the Owari variety, and it has been around for over 20 years, it hasn't been widely cultivated. This is because this small citrus tree has failed to produce fruit of good quality with every tree, leaving the gardener to guess what she's going to get at the end of the growing season. The tree's red-orange fruit is large and carries no more than four seeds.

Kimbrough

Kimborough is a cold-hardy Satsuma variety started in Louisiana. It survives temperatures as low as -11.1 degrees C. It develops into a large spreading tree, producing fruit that ripens November to December. But it is tricky to tell when it has fully matured, since the rind doesn't turn orange at the same time. If left on the tree past maturity, the fruit loses its flavour.

'Miho'

Miho derives from the Japanese cultivar Miyagawa and it produces large high-quality fruit by Thanksgiving. This tree's fruit has a smooth thin rind and a flattish, rather than round, shape. Inside, the pulp is divided into about 11 segments. Miho is also cold-hardy.

Obawase and Big Early

Obawase and Big Early are two different Satsuma tree cultivars that produce similar fruit. The citrus from both are large with up to four seeds each. Their mature rind is reddish orange and grows lose around the inside of the fruit. These two varieties produce ripe fruit by November.

Okitsu

Okitsu develops faster than other Satsuma citrus trees, says Urban Harvesting, a gardening advice website based in Texas. As a result, the Okitsu fruit ripens very early in the season, sometime between late August and early October. This tree is hardy to -5.56 degrees C and its fruit also stores well.
