Types of birds that can fly long distances

The long-distance migratory flying feats of birds are extraordinary. What drives them is the desire to find territories where they can breed and nest successfully. This means they travel each year to places that have the right nesting locations and plentiful food supplies. The process is not without risk; many birds perish on their migratory journeys, mostly from hunger or exhaustion, although predation can also be a factor. Exactly how birds navigate on their journeys is still the subject of research, with theories including orientation by the stars, by the sun and by the earth's magnetic field.

Barn swallow

Until the 18th century, it was widely believed that barn swallows hid in holes and in the mud at the bottom of ponds during the winter. In fact, their story is even more amazing. When they leave Britain at the end of August or in early September, these tiny birds weighing from 17 to 20 grammes (just over half an ounce) actually fly 6,000 miles south to South Africa, crossing the Sahara Desert on the way. After over-wintering there, they then fly back to Britain to nest, arriving in March or April. The maximum recorded age of a ringed swallow is 11 years, so that bird would have covered up to 132,000 miles in its life, just in migration.

Common cuckoo

Information about the migration patterns of the cuckoo is still emerging. The British Trust for Ornithology started a radio tracking scheme to track the paths of migrant cuckoos in 2011. The project has shown that cuckoos migrate to west and central Africa after their summer stay in Britain to countries like the Central African Republic and Nigeria where they overwinter. They return to Britain in the spring to lay their eggs in the nests of unsuspecting host birds such as dunnocks, reed warblers and redstarts.

Great snipe

The great snipe travels up to 4,200 miles from its summer breeding home in Scandinavia to its winter quarters in central Africa. What distinguishes this long distance migrant is that it flies non-stop and it's the fastest of migrant birds with an average speed of 60mph. Other birds migrate further, but at nothing like that speed, and most land birds stop off to feed and rest during their journeys, while the great snipe doesn't although it has plenty of opportunities to do so. The great snipe is a threatened species now only found in the mountains of Norway and Sweden.

Arctic tern

In terms of migratory miles covered, the Arctic tern has no peer. Each year, it flies 44,000 miles on its migratory journey, from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back again. This supreme feat of endurance is accomplished by this relatively small bird, weighing about 100 grammes (3.5 ounces). The bird departs from Greenland in August or September, heads down the coast of either Brazil or Africa, and arrives at the Weddell Sea on the edge of the Antarctic in December or January. In April or May or June, the tern makes the return journey north, following the prevailing winds across the Atlantic. Some Arctic terns stop off to breed in summer on the coast of Britain, with the Farne Islands off Northumberland a noted nesting site.
