Types of Cmu Cinder Block

Breeze blocks are a type of concrete masonry units that are widely used in construction throughout the world. The terms breeze block and cement block are often used interchangeably but there is a difference. Cement blocks are constructed from solid cement where as breeze blocks have coal ash mixed in with the cement, lowering both the cost and weight of the breeze blocks.

Stretcher Blocks

Stretcher blocks are the most common type of breeze block and the one that most people are familiar with. These blocks look like a square eight, although some of them have three section instead of two, with a scallop out of either end to allow mortar to be inserted between blocks in a row. These blocks may be full or half height and come in several lengths, heights and widths.

Corner Blocks

Corner blocks come in several shapes and are needed since the standard stretcher blocks have scalloped ends. Corner blocks have at least one flat end that matches the look of the sides of the block, and some will both ends flat. Others will have a notch or an offset depending on the application.

Lintel Blocks

These are U-shaped blocks that are designed to be placed over openings in the breeze block wall. The opening faces up and is filled with metal reinforcing bars and concrete to form a solid header to bear the weight of the wall above the opening. As with the other types of block, these are available in a wide variety of sizes.

Sash Blocks

Sash blocks are used along the perimeter of widow openings, especially at the bottom. These angled blocks slope away from the window and help channel water away and allow more light to penetrate the windows.

Jamb Blocks

These blocks form the structural element of window and door frames. If used, sash blocks are applied on top of these blocks. Jamb blocks come in a host of sizes and shapes, depending on the specific application.

Chimney Blocks

Chimney blocks come in either one or two piece versions and they are used to form the chimney flue.

Pilaster Blocks

Pilaster blocks are used to form pilasters or columns. Using these blocks makes for easier and faster column building. Most are hollow on the inside to allow for rebar and cement to be poured inside to form a solid column for structural applications. Some are designed to form the column without the use of additional cement or rebar.

Speciality Blocks

Speciality blocks include flat, solid, ground, screen, grade and bullnose blocks. These are typically used in industrial applications and most home improvement centres don't stock them.
