Origami, the art of folding paper into various three-dimensional objects, is an educational and inexpensive craft for kids. Kids will enjoy creating objects from flat paper to play with or display proudly in their room. Origami also teaches kids how to follow instructions and improves manual dexterity. While there are hundreds of intricate origami patterns, it's best to keep origami for kids simple to avoid frustration as they hone their skills.

Skill level:Moderately Easy

Things you need

PaperScissors

Instructions

Origami Helicopter

1 Cut your paper into a rectangle so that it is three times longer than it is wide. The rectangle can be any size, but keep in mind that smaller rectangles are more difficult to manipulate.

2 Crease the rectangle lengthwise down the centre.

3 Cut a small slit down one end of the crease that goes approximately one-third of the way down the rectangle.

4 Fold one side of the slit down onto the rectangle. Fold the other side down onto the other side of the rectangle. Unfold each side so they shoot up at angles like the blades of a helicopter.

5 Add a paper clip to the bottom of the rectangle to add weight. Hold it overhead and release, it will spin like a helicopter as it falls to the ground.

Origami Cone

1 Cut paper into a square of any size. The larger the square, the easier it is to fold.

2 Fold the paper in half so the open edges face the right side like a book.

3 Fold the bottom left corner up to meet the top right corner, creating a diagonal crease in the centre of the rectangle. The paper will now look like a trapezoid with a triangle on top.

4 Fold the top corner of the triangle down and over your last fold. This "triangle" will be made up of two flaps of paper.

5 Open the triangle and fold each flap down on opposite sides of the paper to create the opening for your cone. Place your fingers inside the opening and spread it open further. Fill with candies, popcorn or any treat.
