What is computer monitor resolution?

Your computer monitor's resolution affects how documents, photos, web pages and other items appear on the monitor, as well as how certain applications run on your system. Most monitors and operating systems allow a variety of resolution options for display.

Definition

The resolution is a measurement of how many pixels display on your screen. The higher the resolution, the more pixels used in the display and the smoother the monitor’s image looks.

Reading

Resolution reads as the product of two numbers, such as “1024 x 768.” The first number represents the number of pixel columns displayed horizontally across your screen, and the second number represents the number of rows. Multiply the numbers together for the total number of pixels in your display.

Options

Most operating systems allow you to change the monitor resolution. Windows has resolution options in the Display section of the Control Panel, and Mac OS X options are located in the System Preferences menu.

Limitations

Monitors have a minimum and a maximum resolution rating, and only display appropriately with resolutions set between the two. Your monitor’s resolution may also be limited by the settings of your operating system.

Performance

Resolution affects your computer’s performance. Lower the monitor resolution to run graphically intensive programs such as games and video editing software more smoothly.
