What Size Ceramic Floor Tile Is Best for the Kitchen?

Ceramic tile is a man-made type of tile with a clay base. Sold in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as colours and textures, personal preference is the final determining factor when it comes to deciding what size of tile is best for your kitchen floor.

1- and 2-inch Tiles

One- and 2-inch tiles are sold in mat format. The size of the mats is generally 1 foot by 2 feet, but they can also be sold in 1 foot square mats. The tiles are held together through a combination of glue and matted backing and are installed by laying out a grid on the floor and installing the mats adjacent to each other. They can be used in any application where smaller tile sizes are preferred.

8-inch Tiles

Eight-inch tiles are one of the preferred sizes for commercial kitchen applications, such as cafeterias or restaurants. They can also be used in residential applications based upon personal preference, but the ease of installation through the use of special tile racks allows for 8-inch tiles to be set rapidly across a room, with customisation less important than utility and efficiency in the installation process.

12-inch Tiles

12-inch tiles are the standard size of ceramic tiles sold on the market and installed around the world. They can be used in a wide variety of installations and can be installed in any manner you desire, ranging from straight-lay patterns to diagonal or in conjunction with other sizes. As the most common type of ceramic material available, 12-inch tiles are generally considered the easiest to purchase and install.

Large Bodied Tiles

Large-bodied tiles range from 14 to 24 inches. While more difficult to install than their smaller counterparts, large-bodied tiles are preferred for kitchens where you are looking for something out of the ordinary. However, in smaller kitchens they can often give the appearance of floor panels, so large-bodied tiles are generally reserved for sprawling, ranch-style kitchens.
