Which Is the Best for a Small Room: Small Floor Tiles or Big Tiles?

If you are planning to lay tile on the floor of a small room, you may think that small tiles are the better option, but actually neither large nor small floor tiles are best. Whether small or big tiles are the best for your flooring project depend upon the layout and look you want for the floor and how much work you want to put in.

Design

Allow your design to guide you in choosing between small or big floor tiles. One method of creating your design prior to buying tiles is to draw a sketch of the floor on paper, using a scale such as 1 inch for every 1 foot of floor. Make one sketch for each size tile you are considering and draw the tiles in using the same scale to help you decide which looks best. An alternate method is to cut squares of paper down to the different tile sizes you are considering, and then lay the squares out over the floor to see which size looks best.

Benefits of Each Tile

Because of the limited floor space in a small room, it may take only a few big tiles to cover the floor. Bigger tiles create a more open appearance that can make a room look larger, which can be beneficial in a small room. Small tiles create a checkerboard look on the floor, which may be more the look you desire. Since tiles install individually, using smaller tiles means more work during installation than larger tiles.

Using Both

If you can't decide between small floor tiles and big tiles, use both sizes in your floor design. Design the layout using the sketching or paper-square method. Tile the centre of the floor with large tiles and use small tiles around the edges to create a bordering effect, or alternate between rows of big tiles and rows of small tiles.

Installation Process

Regardless of tile size, the installation process for tiles remains the same. To create a centred floor design, find and mark the centre of the room and begin laying tiles at that point. As you work your way outward from the centre tiles, the tile job remains even, and the tiles around the perimeter of the room will be roughly the same size.
